https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.rupestre.net/tracce/?p=15973__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!cYsWFSH4XlUFfEB2-Zuic-NeesDmcuLAeu2Z4gPqPkM7lxRRunSAkpWv_xnS5lym-x2a_XPlXeGAQLAdLTVDpYsHbw$

This small petroglyph site in southern Morocco has - despite its limited number of decorated panel - a rather large variety of images. There are petroglyphs of quadrupeds (felines, bovines, antelopes, an elephant, perhaps a goat), some birds (probably ostriches) and one simple, yet interesting petroglyph of an outlined anthropomorphic figure. The site is very easily

Dear Colleague in Rock Art

Everyone will agree that scientific publications should always be reliable. The content may never be incorrect or misleading. This also goes for publications regarding rock art, whether made by amateurs or by academics. This short paper (the original of which was published in November 2020) discusses (now in more detail) two “photographs” of petroglyphs from the Majes Valley, southern Peru, and the incorrect conclusions based upon those incorrect illustrations published by two academics from the USA. Regrettably, both their “photos” and their rock art related conclusions are unambiguously incorrect. After 2020 I published several papers/books

This most interesting and valuable book was reviewed me in 2014 and this review was published online onto a website that proved to be unreliable afterwards. For that reason I have deleted the online-paper some time ago. Instead, I have now (2023) re-published the review, offering the interested reader a PDF that can be downloaded at (only)

Dear friend,

It is a pleasure to offer you a copy of EXPRESSION 41. Step by step the new
trends of conceptual anthropology are spreading over, to various aspects of
the traditional archeology, from the meaning of standing menhirs (what is
their meaning?) to that of male and female figurines found in Neolithic
temples (what is their task?), to the function of foot-prints in rock art
(why?), to the concepts of the moving shadows in stone circles (do you
notice them?). Debates are facing new concepts, methods and
interpretations. New cultural vitality is acquired by the research of
meaning. What

In: TRACCE - Online Rock Art Bulletin, Italy. In general, it proves to be rather awkward (or even impossible) to establish the exact species of biomorphic images depicted at Toro Muerto (Peru), and thus this is even more problematic for conflations of two or more animals. In this study I argue that at Toro Muerto several petroglyphs of quadrupeds may well depict a specific

BAR Publishing is pleased to announce two new titles which will be of interest to members of the Rock Art list:

***

Rock Art Research in the Digital Era: Case Studies from the 20th International Rock Art Congress IFRAO 2018, Valcamonica (Italy)

Edited by Miguel Carrero-Pazos, Rebecca Döhl, Julian Jansen van Rensburg, Paolo Medici, Alia Vázquez-Martínez

In this new edited volume, a diverse range of specialists demonstrate how digital technologies can benefit the study of rock art in a variety of contexts. Digital methods and 3D modelling are significantly changing the field of rock art documentation and interpretation, with new approaches that allow us to make eroded rock art panels more visible, especially in cases where the human eye or a raking light is ineffective. Using numerous case studies, this book illustrates how cutting-edge methodologies are integrated within 3D modelling workflows, and how these can manage and disseminate the results to the public in an interactive way.

Rock Art in the Landscapes of Motion: Proceedings of a session of the 20th International Rock Art Congress IFRAO 2018 in Valcamonica, Italy

Edited by Pawel L Polkowski and Frank Förster

This volume presents a collection of papers focusing on the dynamic relationship between rock art, movement and the surrounding landscape. The contributors offer a wide range of theoretical perspectives from broad geographical and chronological contexts, encompassing case studies from three continents, and spanning a timeline from the European Palaeolithic to the Colonial Period of South America. The diverse approaches and contexts converge over themes of movement, motion and mobility - all inherent to rock art and its production.

Cari amici,

Dear friends and colleagues,

SPIRITS IN STONE, just released by Atelier Editions:
a new book by Professor Anati on menhirs and menhir statues.
The new analytical methods of conceptual anthropology led to a
surprising disclosure: already 5,000 years ago, earlier than the
polytheism of the Greek-Roman Olympus, and even earlier than the
Mosaic revelation, there was a monotheistic cult in the heart of
Europe, in the Camonica Valley. In the Chalcolithic period and the
early Bronze Age, the cult of ancestral spirits evolved into that of
the spirit of heaven and earth.

THE ORIGINS OF RELIGION
A project in conceptual anthropology

Dear colleagues and friends,
How come that the bipedal primate invented religion? Do other primates
have similar conceptual expressions? Religions and their beliefs,
myths and rituals, are archetypes of culture, exposing the nature of
the human mind. The monuments, the art they inspired and other
material remains they produced, are paramount sources for the
logical/illogical intellective processing of realities and
unrealities. The course of cultural dynamics proposes new
trends and deletes what is retained to be obsolete. It also tends to
remove or shade both the memory and the relics of

Conceptual Anthropology

Dear colleague and friend,
What is conceptual anthropology? It is the new field of research on
the spirit of culture, uniting the arts, beliefs, traditions, fashions
and other ethic and esthetic, intellectual and spiritual expressions.
A detailed description of its origin and goals appears in EXPRESSION
journal (38, pp. 68-73).
Man is made not only of molecules and statistics, but also of
feelings, hopes, emotions, apprehensions, ambitions, pleasures, and
griefs. These expressions of the human soul are both causes and
effects of behavioral patterns, which is what the new discipline is
concerned with.

Dear colleague in rock art,

Please find enclosed an URL leading to my web page (New Publications) on which you can find a link to my latest publication about the petroglyphs at Punta Colorada, Majes Valley, Peru.

The paper proves that even “minor” rock art sites can be most interesting, especially when placing such a “minor” site in a larger local and regional context. Punta Colorada is such an important “minor” site as it may well connect (graphically, literally and metaphorically) two most important “major” rock art sites in the valley. Additionally, the site of Punta Colorada also seems to

Dear Colleague in Rock Art,

I have pleasure to inform you that my next paper about rock art in Peru is now available. It deals with the rock art site of Quebrada de La Tuna, a small, yet important petroglyph site in the Sihuas Valley of southern Peru. As early as 1977 Cuban archaeologist Antonio Núñez Jiménez visited the site and graphically recorded several boulders with petroglyphs. This present study re-describes the site, offering updated information about the rock art (through a survey of 2008), also explaining the position of Núñez Jiménez.

Dear colleagues and friends,
It is a pleasure to enclose a complimentary copy of EXPRESSION 36. New
discoveries emerge from the rethinking of old findings. This issue is
reconsidering traditions, myths and beliefs. A paper on the Near East
is uniting archeology, the Bible and other ancient texts for a study
in conceptual anthropology revealing elements which allow to date the
biblical exodus. An article on Europe is considering archeological
sites in connection to classical mythology. It is a contribution to
the sources of mythology. Another article is unveiling a world of

New paper on rock art at Beringa - PERU

Dear colleague in rock art,

This study describes curious cases of “missing” information about petroglyphs reported (and recorded?) at the archaeological complex at Beringa in the Majes Valley of southern Peru. It was claimed (2007) by the leading excavator, Prof. Tiffiny Tung, that all petroglyphs were documented in 2001 and yet not a single illustration of the Beringa petroglyphs is available. Why? This study tries to answer that question, also by placing the issue in a broader context by adding a revealing Addendum.

WHAT TO DO WITH PREHISTORIC AND TRIBAL ART?

Dear friends and colleagues,
The artworks of early men are open books, awaiting to be read and
understood. They are the record of the intellectual history of
mankind, a unique, stunning source to understand the cores of the

Prehistoric paintings and engravings are found and studied in over 180

Organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Vatican workshop addressed the subject “Symbols, Myths and Religious Sense in Humans Since the First” — that is, since the first humans emerged a couple of million years back. Dr. Dehaene began his slide show with a collage of photographs showing symbols engraved in rock — scythes, axes, animals, gods, suns, stars, spirals, zigzags, parallel lines, dots. Some of the photos he took during a trip to the Valley of Marvels in southern France. These engravings are thought to date back to the Bronze Age, from roughly 3,300 B.C. to 1,200
