Schedule of SGSUP-related AAG Sessions

Hi everyone,

Last year, people found it useful to have an AAG schedule that contained
helpful information on the timing and locations of presentations involving
SGSUP students and faculty. For AAG 2024, I asked one of my TAs to create
a Google form to collect similar kinds of information for this year's
upcoming conference.

*Here is the link
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.gle/P6M9Gftg7wdvMQcy7__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!ay1wkCmoeR-dElteOCIC7jXS422SbUQMVh-JNURFnCdQyicFHVt7O2q4PgQ8rcojTHc-Q3Pv2gF_HQbYhGCvHCy6tsM$>
to
the Google Form that we ask you to fill out if you are presenting at AAG
2024. *

1. We received four nominations for the Graduate student committee and two
individuals accepted their nominations. As we hope to support a committee

an MA/PhD student (self nominations are also encouraged) to serve in these
leadership roles. Provided I receive a few more nominations, I will reach

Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well. My time as Graduate Student
Representative comes to an end in December so it is time to nominate and
elect new student leadership.

Over the past several years, SGSUP Graduate student representation has
taken several forms. Prior to this year, there was a 6-person Graduate
Student Committee that represented students across graduate programs in
SGSUP. This past year, I have served as the singular Graduate Student
Representative, working with Jacob Heid (president of the Student Planning

Hello SGSUP,

Hope you all have had an excellent semester so far! As you may know, the
Graduate Student Committee (GSC) is the main student governance body within

Sorry. I’d like to add one comment.

Though I believe these profiles are great- ASU’s general counsel made the
decision that having publicly available student information, such as a
profile, was a violation of FERPA. Therefore, only students who hold a
teaching or research position (such as a graduate research associate or
graduate teaching assistant) are able to have publicly visible profiles.

AAPI, BIPOC, and international students.

The past few years have witnessed a tragic rise in racist hate crimes
against minorities in the United States. A report released by Stop AAPI Hate

women, in particular, report hate incidents 2.3 times more frequently than

Here's an unsolicited "public service announcement" FYI: If I read it correctly, Maricopa County can expect 14 infected persons per 1,000 returning students if school started today. Multiply that by the number of students expected back by August 20 to get an estimate of what ASU might be facing. It should be interesting. Lots of geography research projects suggest themselves. Osiyo!

Hope you all are enjoying another November week! Thanks to all who came out
to the Geography PhD/MA Academic Feedback Forum.

A couple quick notes before we talk about this week's events:

The grad student life survey is still open! This survey helps us plan
better events based on your schedules, interests, and general feedback.
There's also a new addition to it related to housing costs. It's entirely
optional, but potential students keep asking about the cost of living in
Tempe.

Osiyo!

We've been updating the SGSUP Graduate Student Committee Bylaws, and we
want your opinion. Here's a summary of the potential changes:

- Changing most positions to run on the calendar year (January -
December), so that coordinators can plan over the summer and hit the ground
running in the Fall.
- Creating first-year coordinators who will make sure that activities
and events reflect the interests of students in their first year of their
graduate programs. First-year coordinators will serve for the academic year
(Fall & Spring).
