At last week’s meeting the group discussed the EC Chair transition, set for July 2026. The members present at this meeting would like Harris to play an active role in the transition for a softer landing for the new chair.

Please reply to this email if you agree or disagree on the following: As outgoing EBP Executive Council Chair, Harris Lewin should continue to serve in a limited capacity to onboard the incoming chair, likely until December 2026.

Here is suggested text for 6 (b):

The Executive Council discussed the sticking points. All endorsed supporting the new WIPO requirement that anyone submitting a patent application based on genetic resources must declare where samples came from and IPLC interests, and that EBP encourages downstream users who wish to establish non-patent IP to abide by the same principles. A number of other suggested wording clarifications were also discussed and agreed.

Dear EBP Executive Council,
As follow-up to the Subcommittee Chair replacement conversation at the June 26th EC meeting, please read the following. The Governance Document details the process for replacing Committee Chairs in Section 4.1, below. It does not, however, detail the process for replacing Subcommittee Chairs in Section 4.4, below; as written, a subcommittee chair does not require a vote of the EC. This is the first Subcommittee chair replacement since adopting the Governance Document so it’s important to flush out the process to maintain transparency and consistency. We will keep this issue on the agenda for the next

Hi Nicolette et al.,

This seems reasonable to me as we transition from the old application
process to the new.

Perhaps we already talked about this, but regarding HK's tremendous
spreadsheet of published and planned genome assemblies, do we know if these
species have already been or will be soon registered in GoaT? GoaT would
be more clear than an Excel sheet for understanding their diverse and much
appreciated contributions going forward.

Dear EBP Executive Council members,

Wise Ancestors was asked to provide clarity on the language they included in their application to become an EBP Affiliated Project:

The EBP Executive Council would like some additional information concerning the planned submission of assemblies and metadata to INSDC databases (the application says that data “may” be submitted to an INSDC database). Please specifically state under what conditions data will/will not be submitted to INSDC. Please specifically indicate what restrictions might not allow such submissions, and whether you anticipate that Wise Ancestors will likely be sequencing a large fraction of species with such restrictions

Dear All,

I think this is one of those cases where we have to accept some exceptions

I agree, Kerstin. I am completely satisfied with the prompt answer that was given. At this stage, we are an inclusive organization, and we must continue to develop and adapt our strategy so that the EBP mission can ultimately be accomplished.

Hi, all. Sorry for the delayed reply. Just got back from my 'Biological

this conversation, as we were having a dialogue with some indigenous folks

knowledge and views of biodiversity. My students and I helped in a
ceremonial and lengthy production of "mambe" (aka, ypadu = coca leaves &
ash) while listening to Kukama stories and asking their views on life.
Yes, I did bring a dry shipper, and yes we were allowed to collect, with

I also am happy with what Wise Ancestors wrote. I fully support working with IPLCs, moving at a pace that they are comfortable with, and finding solutions that work for them, alongside the same for other stakeholders including national governments and of course our own funders and institutions.

But I also still see the goal of EBP as being to create a digital reference resource available to all, which I (and others) see as meaning that the sequences constituting it need to be open and freely usable. So our work with IPLCs (and other stakeholders) should continue to be to

Mark - thank you for the BG24 report and for the incredible job the Sanger team did in delivering the conference. Corporate sponsorship is an important issue, and we need to find a way in which obtaining such support will give something to sponsors without detracting from the meeting. The Secretariat should also be able to support BG25. Looking forward to discussing this next week.

Dear All:

Thank you for commenting on the new draft of the EBP Data Sharing Policy. We are at a critical juncture regarding our data policy and the future of the EBP. I plan to devote about 20 minutes of today’s EC agenda to discussing the document and next steps.

Best,

Harris

I am hoping to hold the meeting to one hour today. The data policy is pretty high up on the agenda so should be ok.

Thanks for the respoonse Richard
Thanks for putting the doc up for comments Ann!

It is likely we are aligned; I am just looking for a way to include (eg) CNGB genomes and JGI genomes where/when/if EBP designates that these are "blessed" databases for deposition. CNGB is likely a yes I think (it is open and data are downloadable, but its not in INSDC [yet]); JGI is a no at present (as there is a sign-up/membership control gate). It matters, as these db contain thousands of EBP quality completed genomes and suggesting EBP partners should resequence them just to

Dia dhuit all,

I hope you all are having a nice weekend and do not see this email until
Monday morning ;).

Thanks for sharing your edits and thoughts on this so far, Mark and
Richard. For ease, I have started a shared Google Doc so that we can track
all of the comments in one place. Here is the document:

You should have the appropriate permissions. @Richard Durbin
<[log in to unmask]>, could you copy your comments into the Doc? So that we do
not lose them in an email exchange.

Dear all

I support most of Mark’s edits, but not all.

I strongly argue to remove the statement in point 4 "Where such genome sequences meet EBP quality technical standards, the EBP may count such genomes towards overall progress metrics.” From my perspective that fundamentally changes the goals of EBP. While EBP can appreciate and support private databases for FAIR and CARE reasons, sequences in them are not available openly for the common benefit of all mankind, and they don’t contribute to (my understanding of) what EBP was set up to do.

Thanks very much Ann

I fully appreciate and indeed welcome your comments. And I understand and respect the point of view of many in the indigenous peoples’ community, and no doubt many in governments across the world, that open publication is not the way for them. There is no doubt that it is giving up control, and potential value from downstream exploitation of that control.
