Spectrum Follows Form Follows Function: Unpacking the Photosynthetic Structure/Spectrum Relationship Abstract: Biological photosynthesis has long served both to inspire and perplex researchers seeking to harness sunlight for "green" energy production. Recent advances in both ultrafast spectroscopy and structural biology provide unprecedented glimpses into the inner workings of chlorophyll-binding photosynthetic proteins, the molecular "workhorses" of photosynthesis. Unfortunately, drawing quantitative connections between spectroscopic and structural data -- let alone their relation to biological

Substrate Flexibility and DNA Repair: Removal of Uracil by Uracil-DNA Glycosylase Abstract: The base excision repair (BER) pathway is responsible for removing small, non-helix distorting lesions such as oxidized, alkylated and deaminated nucleobases from the genome. BER is initiated by specialized DNA glycosylases that recognize the lesion and catalyze the excision of the damaged base; most often by flipping the lesion out of the DNA stack. DNA sequence effects have

Evaluating the thermodynamics of phase separation in lipid membranes using molecular dynamics simulations Abstract: Liquid-liquid phase separation and the resultant formation of biological condensates plays an essential role in cellular function. Phase separation was first characterized in a biological context as the "lipid raft" hypothesis describing the mixing behavior of cellular membranes.

Forecasting Protein Evolution in Data Driven Sequence Landscapes Abstract:
In the course of evolution, proteins diversify their sequences while keeping their 3D structure and biological functions remarkably conserved. Modern sequence databases provide us with increasingly large samples for this sequence diversity. In my talk I will describe how these samples can be used to infer

Prime Movers of Cell Biology: The Most Ancient Molecular Motors and How They Work Abstract:
Polymerization-driven molecular motions are found in all domains of lifem—archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes. In bacteria, which lack ‘stepping motors’ like myosins and kinesins, the assembly of actin-like filaments helps organize intracellular contents and move large molecular cargoes, including large, low-copy plasmids. In eukaryotes,

Seeking the Molecular Origins of Aging with Multiscale Models of Biogenetic Membranes Abstract:
Energy dissipation due to membrane hyperpermeability is ubiquitously implicated in autoimmunity, ischemia, inflammation, cancer, cardiometabolic and neurologic disorders, accounting for roughly 80% of mitochondrial diseases in late childhood or adult life. Survival rate of patients with undetected symptoms drops to 30% or less in acute cases, such as in mesenteric ischemia. Consequently, there is a growing biomedical
