Other aspects of the book are environmental studies/science, cultural evolution and theology. The central question of the book is: Is the human species special? That is to say, is there a fundamental division of some kind between the human species and the rest of the planetary life-forms? It is

Thanks to everybody who came to see the debate at the ICA last Monday and for making it such a huge turnout! It was certainly interesting to discuss the future of online publshing, esepcially given the current happenings at Stimulus Respond. Which reminds me - I haven't forgotten the extra online content that I promised way back in the day, it will be available very soon. There are a couple of extra essays to co-incide with the Magic issue as well as a few extra bits that I will tell you about later.

Some exclusive material will still be downloadable from our website, but the magazine as such will only be available by subscription and from selected outlets. This is a chance for our readers to have delivered to them, every two months, a document that is aesthetic as much as it is thought-provoking and which is expected to become a collector's item.

'Stimulus began the first time an angry person cast a word instead of a rock' Sigmund Freud
'A visual and literary feast' Virginia Woolf
In conjunction with the arrival of Stimulus Respond magazine on 24 September, you are cordially invited to the official launch party. There will be DJs, music and other stimulation for your enjoyment!

I am currently looking for two regular columnists for Stimulus Respond.
Started as a respite from the mundanity of the contemporary fashion press, Stimulus is the first magazine to weave together anthropology and art with the flair of a style magazine and the attitude of street culture. Every two months, we present a combination of literature, photography, fashion, poetry and music in order to construct a monograph that explores the foundations of a world that we grow up to take for granted.
Thanks again for your comments about the last issue of Stimulus, Stories. The issue has proven to be our most successful to date and we are now seeking material for both the next issue and for an exciting project due to happen in the following months.
Firstly - the next issue is called Animals. The deadline for synopses is 18 April.

UTA Conference on the Suppressions and Reassertions of The Female Principle in Human Cultures.
University of Texas at Arlington, March 30-April 1, 2000.
Keynotes: Martha Nussbaum, March 30; Drucilla Cornell, March 31; and Eva Keuls and Nancy Tuana, April 1
This conference recognizes the suppression of femaleness as a primary meaning of Western and other cultures over a long period, and opens this issue to renewed scrutiny. It seeks to identify, document, account for, and interpret the suppression of femaleness via the specific forms it takes from early periods to the present, and to identify and describe
The ASU libraries has a trial subscription to the Annual Review Series (including anthropology) so for a while we have free access to search/download/print content from this journal. If you like the service, click on the button that lets you comment and tell the library to keep it, or it will go away! On the same page you will find a link to a trial of JSTOR which has lots of back issues of expensive journals.
I am passing this info along from Michelle Hegmon:
SAR predocs are competitive, but wonderfully cushy awards for students in the last stages of dissertation work (i.e., for writing).
Applications are due on November 15, applicants must be nominated by the department, and the department can have only one nominee. If more than one student is interested, we will need to begin the decision-making process soon. If you are planning to apply, please alert your chair in the next week. Notifications from the faculty to the subdisc. head are due September 17. This doesn't mean you have to write your

I am trying to gauge interest in a possible course offering for the spring. Jack Kugelmass, an anthro. from humanities, is considering a class on photo-ethnography. It would deal with methodological and theoretical aspects of photography when doing ethnographic work. In addition, it would provide skills in photo production and development both in a traditional wet dark room as well as in the digitial dry dark room. If there is interest, I will try to acquire and circulate a preliminary syllabus from Dr. Kugelmass. Anyone can email me at [log in to unmask] Thanks,

Their positions run through the summer and the 1999-2000 school year. A new secretary and treasurer will be elected in the fall when we all come back to school.

I am about to announce the election results, which may or may not surprise you. However, as a final act in the capacity of president, I wanted to announce the AAGS Perpetual Honor System Book Sale in the Grad/Faculty lounge. I've matched up as many incoming students as I can, and we almost have enough people. I am trying to match subdisc. and program level as a minimum, and interests where possible (many students haven't specified that much.)
Anyways, Archaeology and Sociocultural Anthropology are taken care of...
we still need some generous volunteers to fill these slots:
It is the time of year when we elect a new AAGS President and Vice-President. The current officeholders are Steve Swanson (AAGS Pres) and Kerri Flanagan (AAGS VP). AAGS Secretary and Treasurer positions are elected at the beginning of Fall semester, so we don't need to worry about those positions now.
Does anyone have the book "The Archaeology of West Mexico" edited by B. Bell checked out from the library? If you do, could I borrow it to copy a chapter from it within the next couple of days? If I could do this before Friday morning I would really, really appreciate it.
Hello all, It's that time of year again...if you are going to be at a different address during the summer and would like your FIRST class mail forwarded, you should print out the form below and return it to Marsha (A-125). If you are changing your address permanently, stop by Marsha's office and fill out a pink "Change of Address" form (they are outside of her door).
It's that time of year again; we are looking for volunteers to perform the valuable service of mentoring incoming students. The department will be sending out Welcome packets soon to incoming students (you may remember receiving one of these...). In that packet we provide the name of a grad student who will act as a mentor, attempting to match the sub-deiscpline focus and anthropological interests of each mentor/mentee pair. The more volunteers we have, the greater we can match up interests, which is beneficial to the incoming students.
I will be hosting a Happy Hour/Cocktail party this Friday evening, begining at 6 pm and continuing until 10 pm. PLEASE COME! This is the last party I will get to host while I am in my 20's (the dreaded day is next wednesday)
I will be serving primarily Margaritas and Cervezas (heavy and light) as well as non-alcoholic beverages; of course the bar is usually well stocked, so other accomodations are possible. Please bring yourselves, all of your friends or family members, including non-anthro types, and some solid or liquid subsistence item. No gifts, please, I'm celebrating

Is anyone interested in going to Four Peaks for happy hour this friday? It is pretty crowded there, but if several people are interested in going, we can send a few early birds to take over some contiguous tables on the patio (before 5pm) so that we can have actual places to sit after 5 pm.

There is a large format plotter at the GIS/Visualization lab upstairs in the computing commons. ARI will also be open during spring break, if you are using their computers to make your posters.
