PhD Students:

For those of you interested in advanced stats training in targeted tools skills, I recommend you look into the ICPSR Summer Program. While they have not announced the schedule for summer2017 yet, you can look at what they did last summer to get an idea of the range and options that might be of interest to you. I try to catch one of the 305 trainings each summer myself and have really enjoyed them. But they also have more intensive sessions that last several weeks and cover multiple statistical skills as well as multiple software platforms.

Hello SPA Doc Students.

I have a blonde oak futon and accompanying spring mattress that I would like to give to someone if they are willing to come and get it. The cover is chocolate in color and it comes with matching side cushions, along with a second cream colored cover. The first responder (who is willing to take it off my hands quickly) can have the lot!

ABSTRACT
Newer communication technologies (CTs) will always vie with more mature technologies for the attention of time-constrained legislators. As continual advances in CT make new methods of communication available to legislators, it is important to understand how newly introduced CTs influence novel and changing legislator behaviors. The mixed-method research presented in this study provides deep insights into the relationships between legislators and the CTs they use. This study offers many contributions, among them:

The EITM is a great training workshop for advanced methods (see below). I cannot recommend it highly enough. While the substantive focus is based in political science, the tool skills are useful in all aspects of policy and PA work as well. Please consider this opportunity (which even has some NSF support to lower your costs substantially). Applications are due one week from today (March 21st). The session runs from June 16-July 11.

Recent developments at the intersection of biological, information and communications technologies have opened the way to profound transformations in biomedical research and practice by eliciting and aggregating data from human bodies at scale and scope that were previously unimaginable. Such bodies of data form a critical infrastructure for developing a more precise and personalized medicine. While the PublicServiceCareers.Org website is probably the single best site to find academic positions in our field, they also include a few policy analyst positions. Thank you for participating in three job market preparation talks this semester. I guess that some of you attended those talks but did not have a chance to communicate comments and feedbacks to the presenters. Dear Friends,

I invited Dr. Natalie Helbig from Center for Technology in Government for our next colloquium talk (October 4, Friday). Her research interest has been on information use and management in public organizations. In the attached paper, she discusses the consequence of poorly designed performance information artifacts on performance information use, relying on the combination of an in-dept case study and system dynamics approach (a type of simulation). I think this talk can appeal to two different groups - those who are interested in performance information use in government and mixed methods (especially, case study + simulation).

Just a reminder of the upcoming renovation of the doctoral area this Thursday August 22.

In addition to having your personal items removed and stored in Dr. Danzig's office by Wednesday August 21 please review the books that are stacked on the lockers to see which are of continuing value and need to be kept. As we clean out the area we will be getting rid of books, video tapes and materials that have no further value.

Hi everyone.

Two things about the directory:

Completion of the information is required for students who are receiving SPA funding. Please send your updated info to Nicole B. [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> as soon as you can.

For students who are receiving an RA in 2013-2014, I ask that you carefully complete the research interests section. SPA will use this information internally in making your RA assignments for 2013-2014, so that you are suitably paired with faculty who have similar research interests.

Title: Accomplishments and Challenges of the Round Three Federal Empowerment Zone Program: The Case of Tucson

Abstract

The Empowerment Zones were created in 1993 under Clinton's administration, demonstrating a commitment to solving tough socio-economic problems in distressed communities. The main objective associated with this program was economic recovery of distressed communities by creating jobs and providing various services to the indigenous population. The designation of the Empowerment Zones went in three rounds (1994, 1998, and 2001), and although the types and amounts of federal incentives varied across rounds, the four principles around which the program originated remain unchanged:
