Brown-bag Lunch Conversation: "Inequality and Urban Governance"
When: Friday May 8, 2015 at 12-1:30 pm
Location: UCENT 705

Recent events in Baltimore have pressed questions of race, inequality, and the governance of urban America into the national consciousness--again. These events also press questions about the role that institutions like schools of public affairs have--or should have--in contributing to the development of policy and governance strategies that address the important social, political, economic, and organizational challenges that the situation in Baltimore, Ferguson, and around the US raise. We invite members of the ASU School of Public Affairs community to an informal

Good morning,
I would like to share with all of you the true reason behind TicketsBite LLC. Thank you for taking the time to read my email and visiting the website. http://www.ticketsbite.com

Even with the economy struggling, traffic ticket fines aren’t lowered, in fact, fines continue to increase. There is no understanding from the government to realize

Good morning fellow ASU alumni, students and staff,

I recently came across a unique idea, and it started with getting a red light ticket. Well, being a fairly new graduate, I'm still not making great money, so I was trying to figure out how to pay for it. Long story short, I thought about an insurance company specifically for traffic tickets. Fortunately, I teamed up with another ASU alumni

What Comes After the Computer Chip?
Craig R. Barrett & Michael M. Crow

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore famously wrote about how the number of transistors on silicon chips would double roughly every two years--an observation now known as Moore's Law. Experts say that once circuitry shrinks to seven nanometers, quantum effects will take over--and it won't be possible to get any smaller with silicon chips. So computer scientists are facing the question: what will come next? No one

Congress and a broader understanding of the sources of public opinion toward

What managers and administrators should understand about what makes for a vibrant downtown, but usually do not! If you aspire to work as a city manager, urban planner, or community developer (public or private) this class is a must.
The focus of this course is the examination of the development of downtown Phoenix; the good, the merely bad, and the execrable. Major public servants and private sector developers will be invited to explain what they had in mind and how they think their project turned out.

Take a look at The Dirksen Center's Congressional Timeline 2.0!

In October 2010, we announced the first version of The Dirksen Center's new
Congressional Timeline. At that time we introduced more than 200 examples of
major laws passed by Congress from 1933 to the present. As with any new
website, our first version had some bugs to work out. So considering our users'
feedback and taking a hard look at our first version, we have done our best to
improve the timeline by creating the Congressional Timeline 2.0.

What Organization Theorists and Public Policy Researchers Can Learn from One Another: Publicness Theory as a Case in-Point
Abstract: I argue that organization theory and public policy studies, two field that share
many common origins, have had surprisingly little cross-fertilization and that
this state of affairs is both injurious and correctable. This paper (1) considers the
costs and the foregone opportunities resulting from this mutual intellectual
disregard, (2) presents an illustrative case to show the possibility of crossfertilizing

Technologies in Public Agencies and in Public Administration Research: Three Mini-Cases of Use-Inspired Research

Virginia Tech

Abstract: Emerging technologies are transforming public agencies and the nature of governance. Public Agencies have long recognized the value of information technologies for achieving their missions, streamlining operations, and communicating with the public. Yet, the track record of public sector information systems (IS) projects - system acquisitions, design and deployment - has been sub-par. I contend that one possible reason is their dual personality. They are both (a) public

The Separation of Powers' Ratchet and U.S. Federal Administration

Abstract: U.S. public administrative theory and practice focus on managerial, political, and legal functions related to the Constitution's partial separation of executive, legislative, and judicial powers. Since 1946, Congress and the federal courts have developed institutionalized frameworks for exercising "joint custody" of federal administration along with the president. The congressional framework emphasizes democratic governance values such as transparency, stakeholder representation, participatory administrative rulemaking, and overall responsiveness to the public. The judicial framework promotes constitutional

The Logic of Discipline: Economic Globalization and Governmental Reform

Abstract: Governmental reform in many countries has been driven by a design philosophy which I call the logic of discipline. This logic is applied with the aim of restricting popular control over governmental functions that are critical to the operation of a globalized economy. It combines a deep skepticism about the reliability of democratic institutions with a naive faith in the capacity to effect significant systemic change through statutory or constitutional reform. We

Abstract: Nearly all states implement some type of program designed to reduce the burden of the local property tax for homeowners. This type of tax relief program is characterized by a grant from state to local governments that is intended to replace property tax revenue and lower homeowners' tax payments. Two separate

State Income Tax Disincentives: Military Residencies

Abstract: The effect of an income tax on people's choice of residencies is difficult to measure and often muddled within empirical literature; theory suggests that high income workers will migrate out of high tax areas and be replaced by low income workers. Using military residency data from 1998 to 2005 across all 50 states, I find that service members are more likely to claim their legal residency in a state with favorable income tax policies.
